In 1988, Atwater ran Bush One's campaign for president. His attacks on women were less pronounced at the time. But Atwater notoriously linked Democratic Presidential nominee Michael Dukakis to a black parolee named Willie Horton with a wide range of unmistakable insinuations.
Three years later, dying of brain cancer at age 40, Atwater made a death bed repentance:"I am sorry for both statements: the first for its naked cruelty, the second because it makes me sound racist, which I am not.”
